Today we are all about hair. We have been gifted with such glorious hair and we have different variations. Afro-textured hair appears dense, each strand of hair growing in a tiny, angle-like spiral shape. We mainly have 4 types of hair namely, kinky-coily, which is tightly coiled, curly which as the name suggests has curls, wavy, defined by waves and straight. These are broken down further into “types”
1. Kinky-Coily hair
Type 4c: Hair that is tightly coiled and has more of a very tight “O”-shaped pattern.
Type 4b: Tightly coiled hair that has a less-defined kink pattern. Has more of a “Z”-shaped pattern.
Type 4a: Hair that is tightly coiled and has a very defined “O”-shaped pattern.
2. Curly hair
Type 3c: Defined by tight curls in corkscrews.
Type 3b: Has a medium amount of space of the curls. Can have a combined texture.
Type 3a: This hair type is thick and full with much body. Has a definite curl pattern. The hair tends to be frizzy and can have a combination texture.
3. Wavy hair
Type 2c: The hair has wider waves and tends to be frizzy.
Type 2b: The hair has more of a defined “S” pattern and tends to be frizzy.
Type 2a: Has a Loose “S” pattern and sticks close to the head.
4. Straight hair
Type 1c: Straight hair. It is coarse and bone straight.
Type 1b: Has much body, more volume and fuller.
Type 1a: Is very soft and shiny. The hair tends to be oily and hard to damage.
We have been styling our hair using hot combs, having dreadlocks and the Afro hairstyle which emerged in the 1960s.
Afro-textured hair care has evolved over the years with braiding, weaving, short hair cuts, and rocking completely bald heads as is popular now. There are so many products in the market to cater to this glorious hair. Our hair is beautiful, unique and diverse and we should wear it with pride.
