The June/July cold weather has officially kicked in! From wearing layers and layers of warm clothing to using heaters in our homes, we are keeping warm as best as we can. Your beauty routine should also not be left behind. Here are some tips:
- Moisturize, moisturize: It is very important to moisturize daily. Cream-based or petroleum moisturizers are great as they retain lots of moisture in the skin. It is best to apply moisturizer directly to wet skin after bathing so that the moisturizer can help trap surface moisture.
- Limit the use of hot water and harsh soaps: It is very tempting to use almost scalding hot water during baths, during this cold season. Extremely hot water strips away the skin’s natural oils, leaving it dehydrated and causing the skin to dry quickly. Very hot water strips off all the protective sebum, which keeps our skin barrier healthy. However, take short lukewarm showers or baths with soap that does not irritate the skin. Gently pat skin dry and apply petroleum-jelly-based or cream moisturizer immediately after.
- Carry out your cleansing routine but do not overdo it: It is very important to cleanse your skin in order to remove dirt, oil and other debris. Failure to do so causes the buildup of oil and dirt that may lead to acne, more prominent pores, and inflammation. Use a gentle cleanser that is kind to your skin in the morning and evening.
- Apply sunscreen: Even on cold days, the sun is still out; so it’s important to apply your sunscreen. This protects your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause premature skin aging. Sunscreen also helps reduce the risk of skin cancer.
- Eat right and stay hydrated: Besides taking care of your skin externally, it’s important to moisturize internally as well. Drinking plenty of fluids ie water, soups, juices and smoothies helps avoid dryness. Water keeps your body hydrated and refreshed and helps maintain your skin’s elasticity.
