Motivation Monday: Youth Empowerment

Happy new week! Today we are all about youth empowerment. What is youth empowerment? Youth empowerment is a process where children and young people are encouraged to take charge of their lives. They do this by addressing their situation and then take action in order to improve their access to resources and transform their consciousness through their beliefs, values, and attitudes. Youth empowerment aims to improve the overall quality of life. There has been a lot of conversation about youth empowerment and the government as well as many organizations are involved in this. We are making significant progress and we applaud ourselves for that. We need to continue empowering the youth as they are the leaders of tomorrow. Here are ways in which we can continue doing that:

  1. Mentor young people: Mentors are very important in any society. Those who are more experienced should prioritize walking alongside young people who also desire to grow their careers and make an impact in their communities and even globally. As a young person, you can also exercise peer-to-peer mentorship. You are never too old or young to mentor another person.
  2. Let young people find their own path: One of the greatest ways to propel the youth in the right direction is to let them discover themselves. Parents and guardians should allow their children to choose their career paths and even invest in them if they can. The support means so much to young people and helps them develop into independent adults who are responsible, can make descisions for themselves and enjoy their lives even more.
  3. Invest in young people: Finances are normally a big issue when it comes to young entreprenuers. Many aspiring business people have great ideas and big dreams and need financial support and advise to get started and keep going. It is important for them to be supported as much as possible, even more being given tips and tricks on how to be more financially independent. We are now seeing many organisations especially here in Africa empowering young entreprenuers which is a big step in the right direction.
  4. Exercise Humility: It is important for older people to be humble and willing to accept new ideas from young people. It is important to be willing to listen and implement good and new ideas epecially when they are even better.
  5. Give the young people positions of leadership: Young people are energetic and have fresh ideas. We need to trust the youth and allow them to make decisions without controlling and micromanaging them. Yes, you can offer guidance, but it is important to believe in their capacity to lead. We are so excited that more young people are having a say in organizations, running businesses and even vying for positions of leadership especially in the next year’s general election.

There is so much to discuss about youth empowerment. More than ever we need the youth to speak up, work hard and play their role in society. What are your thoughts on youth empowerment? Comment down below!
