Today we are taking a look at the beauty products we use and studying more about the ingredients used to make them.
Honey: Honey is produced by bees and has so many benefits. It is a natural moisturizer and is mostly used in the making of lotions, body creams and scrubs.
Collagen: Known for its antiaging properties, collagen helps improve skin’s elasticity and helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This comes from the tissues and bones of animals, as well as animal skins, ligaments and tendons. Most of the collagen used in the industry comes from beef or fish.
Shellac: Did you know that animal-based resin is used to give that gloss that is found in nail polish? Shellac is made from the lac, a tiny insect. Because of its thermoplastic qualities and glossy appearance, shellac is used in nail varnish and hair gels.
Lanolin: This ingredient moisturizes, soothes and hydrates skin. It is mostly found in lip balms, hair conditioners and face and body moisturizers. Lanolin comes from sheep’s wool though other plant-based alternatives such as plant fats e.g. olive oil, coconut oil or shea butter are used.
Carmine: This is a red dye, commonly found in lipsticks and nail polish. Carmine is also widely used as a colourant in the food industry in sweets as well as seasonings. This comes from cochineal insects, which are crushed to extract their crimson colour to make this dye.
