Career Monday: Investing in Yourself

Happy new week! Today we are all about investing in ourselves. We are constantly evolving and learning new things, acquiring new skill sets and habits. Pouring into ourselves makes us better people and improves our quality of life. Here are some ways you can invest in yourself:

  1. Set some goals: Goal setting keeps you focused as goals give you direction ensuring you make the most of your time. What are some personal and career goals you want to achieve? They should be SMART; Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound.
  2. Take time to build your confidence: It is important to understand your value. Your confidence grows by loving and accepting who you are and learning to speak your truth.
  3.  Trust your gut: Listen to your intuition. How do you feel about a particular thing, project or person? Valuing your intuition, by not allowing the thoughts, feelings or statements of others to take away from what you know to be true is very empowering. Paying attention to what you feel helps you make better, smarter and quicker decisions and helps you avoid regret.
  4. Choose joy: Joy is a choice. Throughout the day, we experience both good and bad things. Joy can come from us choosing to highlight or focus on the good things that have happened, instead of the bad experiences we have had.
  5. Take good care of your health: When you feel good, you look good. Eating well, exercising, resting and getting a good night’s sleep are all very important for a healthy body. You are able to be your most productive when you feel good.

Career Monday: Thriving in a side hustle

Happy new month and happy new week! It’s August already! We are grateful for this new month. Today we are all about side hustles. You may have started one, are planning to start one, or have been doing one for a while. Side hustles are important as they boost your income, bringing more financial freedom and flexibility into your life. You are no longer entirely reliant on the income from your day job. Examples of side hustles include: offering delivery services, printing on demand, reselling property eg cars, social media managing, freelance writing, etc. Here are some tips to ensure you thrive in your venture:

  1. Figure out when and where you want to start your side hustle: It is very important to think through what you want to do; consider your passions and the nature of your existing day job. Will you be able to comfortably squeeze in more hours without compromising on your day job? Is it something you enjoy doing? Where will you work from? Online, at home or even rent out a space? It is essential to be able to answer these questions before starting out even as you expand.
  2. Have a budget and financial plan: As much as this is a side hustle, it is serious business. You are spending hours of your precious time investing in it and who knows, it may end up being your main hustle. Calculate how much you need to get started and what equipment you will need if any. It’s also important to have your financial goals written down and strategies you have set to achieve them.
  3. Market your business: Marketing is a continuous process; it never stops. You are your own best marketer, so tell your friends and networks about it. They already know you, you have built rapport, so it’s easier for them to trust you, therefore buying from you. Social media is major right now, so invest wisely in it. Also traditional ways of marketing; offline strategies i.e. business cards, flyers and posters are essential.
  4. Keep learning: Attending short courses, seminars and general research on your areas of interest help you grow. It is important to be aware of market trends, new ways of doing things and overall, sharpen your skills as you go.
  5. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy: This proverb has never been more true. It is very important rest and also take time to do other things you enjoy doing. Scrolling a little on social media never hurt anyone, if you can immerse yourself in your hobbies every so often, do so. Indulging in these fun activities and resting, rejuvenate you and even increase your creativity and productivity.

Meet Gifted Gospel Singer: Kavesu

“Ever since I can remember, I have always loved music. I am blessed to have supportive parents who have held my hand through this journey. Many people who know me, know that I love to sing,” says Grace Kavesu, a gifted Gospel music singer. Grace is a singer, songwriter, worship leader and voice trainer. She accepted the Lord Jesus as her Saviour at a tender age. Her parents were instrumental in guiding her in the way of Christianity. “Because of this, Gospel music was what I desired to sing. Not because I didn’t have any other option, but because I grew to know Jesus deeply and appreciate what He did for me on the cross. It has become more personal,” she says.

“My journey in music has been great. I have seen myself grow in many facets. One of the great contributors to my growth has been going to school to study music.” Kavesu is currently a student at Kenyatta University, studying for a Bachelor’s degree. She started with a certificate and diploma in music.

Grace has released, ‘Nimepona’ her first album. She is now working on her second album. She is also hoping to have a live concert towards the end of this year.

“I am married to Andrew Mwau, an amazing man, and together we have one daughter, Taraji. He has been a great support in my journey and career, which has enabled me to venture into the many things I am involved in now. Balancing all those aspects of my life has not been that difficult because of his overwhelming support.”

Advice to those who would like to get into gospel music? “Your spiritual growth is as important as your skill development. God cares about both. Submit to God, read the word and spend time in prayer. As you pursue God, also seek excellence. Serve him with excellence.”

When she is able to, Grace loves traveling or being on the road with her husband. She also loves to cook, and she enjoys doing it for her family.  Like every other girl, she also loves shopping.

Beauty Tuesday: Making Perfume last longer

We love our scents, floral, fruity, aquatic, woody, name it. A detailed guide on perfume types; here. Here are tips on making the most out of our scents and making them last longer on the skin.

1. Apply petroleum jelly: This holds the fragrance longer than if you apply it on dry skin. Petroleum jelly moisturizes your skin hence extending the life expectancy of your fragrance.

2. Reapply your perfume: Some fragrances aren’t meant to last very long and that’s fine. If you detect that your fragrance has faded, you can reapply it, once or twice.

3. Spray perfume from a distance: It is advisable to hold the perfume bottle 5-7 inches away from the skin. This is because it will cover the bigger surface on the skin and perfume will work much better as it is not oversaturated on a single spot.

4. Less is more: When a perfume is too heavy, it can give you a headache. If your perfume is quite strong 1-2 sprays are good enough, 3-4 for light sprays eg body mists.

5. Take care of your bottle: It is important to avoid shaking your bottle as this reduces the perfume’s lifespan. Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, humidity and high temperatures as this may cause your perfume to break down.

Maintaining healthy skin during the cold weather

The June/July cold weather has officially kicked in! From wearing layers and layers of warm clothing to using heaters in our homes, we are keeping warm as best as we can. Your beauty routine should also not be left behind. Here are some tips:

  1. Moisturize, moisturize: It is very important to moisturize daily. Cream-based or petroleum moisturizers are great as they retain lots of moisture in the skin. It is best to apply moisturizer directly to wet skin after bathing so that the moisturizer can help trap surface moisture.
  2. Limit the use of hot water and harsh soaps: It is very tempting to use almost scalding hot water during baths, during this cold season. Extremely hot water strips away the skin’s natural oils, leaving it dehydrated and causing the skin to dry quickly. Very hot water strips off all the protective sebum, which keeps our skin barrier healthy. However, take short lukewarm showers or baths with soap that does not irritate the skin. Gently pat skin dry and apply petroleum-jelly-based or cream moisturizer immediately after.
  3. Carry out your cleansing routine but do not overdo it: It is very important to cleanse your skin in order to remove dirt, oil and other debris. Failure to do so causes the buildup of oil and dirt that may lead to acne, more prominent pores, and inflammation. Use a gentle cleanser that is kind to your skin in the morning and evening.
  4. Apply sunscreen: Even on cold days, the sun is still out; so it’s important to apply your sunscreen. This protects your skin from harmful UV rays, which can cause premature skin aging. Sunscreen also helps reduce the risk of skin cancer.
  5. Eat right and stay hydrated: Besides taking care of your skin externally, it’s important to moisturize internally as well. Drinking plenty of fluids ie water, soups, juices and smoothies helps avoid dryness. Water keeps your body hydrated and refreshed and helps maintain your skin’s elasticity.
